Elections in Nova Scotia
Published by The Editors on Tagged Generalpurpose of this blog is to monitor the course and results of elections in Nova Scotia to show that the results are unfair but could be made fair by incorporating some form of proportional representation into the electoral system.
The criteria for fairness we propose include the following:
- Every vote cast should count - should be meaningful.
- The number of Members of the Legislative Assembly (”MLAs”) elected by each party should reflect the percentage of votes received by that party.
There are other considerations on which some place more significance than others. These would include:
- Results should reflect the demographic makeup of Nova Scotia. In other words, approximately as many women should be elected to the Legislative Assembly as are men.
- Political parties and other institutions ought not to wield inordinate power.
